BREAKING: Future Alfa Romeo, Lancia Models May be Underfunded, Flawed, Not Especially Good Sellers

According to a report in Tuesday’s Automotive News, Fiat CEO Sergio Marscapone has ordered a “strategic review” of Alfa Romeo. This means that like corporate sibling Lancia, Alfa may not be getting new products in the near future. This is a tragic blow for companies that traditionally have well-funded R&D programs, and who develop new platforms and models on strict 12-year product cycles.
“This is a shift from our previous product development. The 147 was replaced promptly after 10 years being on sale. The Model 33 hatchback was also replaced ahead of its 15 year schedule, after a mere 12 years of production. Now that current projects and development are frozen, it could be 20 years until we sell the successor to the new 147 149 Milano Giulietta TBA C-segment car, which debuted this week.” said engineer Nicolo Beretta.
Alfa and Lancia are also concerned about future engine development. Beretta explained “The Alfa Twin-Cam engine was replaced on schedule after being used for a mere 41 years, from 1954-1995. So the scheduled introduction of our new 4-cylinder, scheduled for 2037, could now be delayed.”
The firm has lost money in each of the last 10 years, ranging from 200 to 400 million euros per year. They are fairly certain $100 million was in their jeans pocket but only came out of the dryer as a pile of white fluff.
